CVD vs HPHT lab diamonds: what's the difference and does it matter

If you're shopping for a lab grown diamond, you'll come across two acronyms: CVD and HPHT. These are the two methods used to grow lab diamonds. Most buyers don't need to care which one made their stone, but it comes up often enough that I'll explain what each is, the differences, and whether it should affect your decision.

The short version

HPHT (High Pressure High Temperature) mimics the natural conditions deep in the earth where diamonds form. Carbon is subjected to extreme pressure and heat, and a diamond crystallises around a small seed crystal over a few days to weeks.

CVD (Chemical Vapour Deposition) is the newer method. A diamond seed sits in a chamber filled with carbon-rich gas (usually methane). The gas is heated and the carbon atoms slowly deposit onto the seed, layer by layer, growing the diamond.

Both produce real diamonds. Chemically and structurally identical to natural diamonds. Both are sold as lab grown diamonds with identical grading certificates.

HPHT in more detail

HPHT was the first method used to successfully create diamonds in a lab, back in the 1950s. It's older, more energy-intensive, and produces diamonds in a shorter timeframe than CVD.

The process: a small diamond seed is placed in a chamber along with a carbon source (typically high-purity graphite) and a metal catalyst (iron, nickel, or cobalt). The chamber is heated to around 1,500 degrees Celsius and pressurised to about 1.5 million PSI. Under these conditions, carbon dissolves into the molten metal and recrystallises onto the seed as diamond.

HPHT is particularly good at producing fancy coloured diamonds (yellow, blue) and is sometimes used to enhance the colour of existing CVD diamonds.

The thing to know about HPHT diamonds: they can sometimes have trace metallic inclusions from the catalyst, and they often need their colour corrected post-production.

CVD in more detail

CVD is a newer technique (commercialised in the 2000s) and has become the dominant method for lab grown diamonds in the engagement ring market.

The process: a thin diamond seed is placed in a vacuum chamber, which is filled with carbon-rich gas (usually methane mixed with hydrogen). The gas is heated to around 800 degrees Celsius. The energy breaks down the molecular bonds in the gas, releasing carbon atoms that deposit onto the seed.

The diamond grows layer by layer over several weeks. The CVD method allows much more control over the growing conditions, which is why it's preferred for producing large, high-quality clear diamonds.

The thing to know about CVD diamonds: they can sometimes show a slight brown or grey cast in raw form, which is removed through post-growth treatment.

Should you care which method made your diamond?

Honest answer: for most buyers, no.

Both methods produce diamonds that are graded on the same scale and look identical to natural diamonds. Both produce stones that pass standard diamond testing equipment as real diamonds. Both produce ethically sourced gems with similar environmental footprints.

The grading certificate (IGI or GIA) will tell you the diamond's clarity, colour, cut, and carat weight regardless of which method made it. Those characteristics are what determine quality and price, not the method.

When the method does matter

Two cases where it's worth knowing:

If you're getting fancy coloured lab diamonds. HPHT has historically been better at producing certain coloured diamonds (yellow especially). CVD is closing the gap, but if a coloured lab diamond is what you want, the cutter and the method become more relevant.

If you want very large stones. For diamonds above 3 carats, CVD has the edge because the controlled, slow-growth process can produce larger crystals more reliably than HPHT.

Outside of these cases, two diamonds with identical certifications (same colour, clarity, cut, carat) should look and perform identically regardless of method. Buy the stone, not the process.

Detection and certification

Modern grading labs can identify whether a diamond is CVD or HPHT-grown, and both are clearly labelled on their grading reports. Some certificates will note "laboratory-grown diamond" and specify the growth method. Both methods get the same grading process and the same certificate format.

You don't need to ask which method was used to feel confident in the stone. The certification tells you what you need to know.

The bottom line

Both CVD and HPHT produce real diamonds with the same chemical and visual properties. The growing method is a manufacturing detail, not a quality indicator. Focus on the four C's (cut, colour, clarity, carat) and the certifying lab. Those are what matter for the stone's appearance and value.
