How can I determine the right ring size when shopping for an engagement ring?

Choosing a diamond or moissanite engagement ring is a really exciting journey, but getting the right ring size right is where it becomes a little nerve-wracking. Getting it right without needing to resize later makes the moment feel more effortless. Here's how to do it without giving away the surprise.
1. Borrow an existing ring
If your partner already wears a ring on their ring finger (left hand, fourth finger), borrow it while they're not looking. Either take it to a jeweller, or trace the inner circle on paper and measure the diameter. Make sure it's from the correct finger. Finger sizes vary between hands, so a right-hand ring won't be accurate.
2. Ask someone close to them
If you want to keep the surprise, ask a best friend, sibling, or parent. They can ask casually or do some "window shopping" to get the size. This works well because the person you ask usually has plausible reasons to be curious about jewellery sizes anyway.
3. The string method
Wrap a piece of string or paper around their finger while they're sleeping. Mark where it overlaps, measure the length, and that's your circumference. Match the circumference to a standard ring size chart. Be careful not to pull too tight, you want a measurement that includes a little slack for comfort.
4. Best guess and resize
If none of the above works, take your best guess. Most rings can be resized 1-2 sizes up or down without affecting the design. Australian standard sizes for women are typically I to M (sizes 4 to 7 in US), with N (size 7) being the most common starting point.
5. Comfort first
Fingers swell during the day and in warm weather. The ring should slide on comfortably without being snug. A ring that's slightly loose is easier to wear than one that's slightly tight.
What if it's still wrong?
